Finding Hope at Camp Jubilee
Imagine a child who was diagnosed with Sickle Cell Disease at just a few months old; his family’s world shifted. Between hospital visits, medications, and constant worry about fevers and pain crises, childhood often felt less like play and more like survival. His mother used to say, “I just want him to have the chance to feel like a kid, not just a patient.” That chance came at Camp Jubilee.
He arrived at camp shy, clutching his backpack tightly, nervous about being away from home. He had never spent more than a night apart from his parents, and the thought of ziplining, swimming, or horseback riding felt overwhelming. But when he stepped off the bus, he was greeted by counselors who cheered his name and campers who shared the same journey. For the first time, He realized he wasn’t alone.
By midweek, something changed. He was the first in line at the climbing wall, his laughter echoing as he soared across the zipline. He bonded with new friends over late-night campfire songs and snow cones in the Texas heat.
